The Association of Consulting Engineers of Chile (AIC), began as an initiative of a group of seven visionary engineers: Rodrigo Flores Alvarez, Eduardo Arriagada Moreno, Elías Arze Loyer, Jorge Donoso Infante Eduardo Infante Rengifo, Fernando Martinez and Amaro Serrano Grove Valenzuela, who in 1968 envisioned the need to create an organization concerned with the engineering developed in the country. At that time, companies that undertook major engineering works had their own project departments that executed their designs. The bastions of engineering were housed inside the power, railroads, oil, and mining companies as well as in the Ministry of Public Works and the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development, mainly. The private consulting was an emerging industry, and the number of engineers and technicians that worked with our associates, reached a total of 400.
Over time, these companies have been focusing on developing the essentials of their own business, leveraging all their capabilities to optimize it. For example, power companies were directed to produce or distribute energy, meaning that for them the engineering was not an end but a means to accomplish their mission. The concept of outsourcing began to be applied, where the complement to the core business was contracted with external suppliers, including engineering, among others.
In this passage, engineering was installed primarily in the private sphere, in consulting, in our firms. In Chile, engineering consultancy is a strategic resource, which main objective is to plan, make designs, identify solutions and specify the most appropriate technologies to materialize the public and private investment, especially in the materialization of infrastructure and industry of the country as well as in the supervising of their implementation, commissioning and operation.
We promote excellence by encouraging our associates to contribute to sustainable development of the country with integrity and commitment. We guarantee a job well done and the voice of our associates, supporting them in developing their businesses. The challenge ahead is to continue being recognized as opinion leaders and industry best reference which is a source of pride for our associates.
AIC companies are able to develop complex projects in all areas of economic activity, such as: agriculture, energy, industry, mining, transportation, environment, urban planning and building, delivering in each of them consulting services such as management, planning, study, design or project management.
The AIC has implemented a Certification process that considers background checks of its associates, relating to human capital, material resources, financial and business experience in the areas of economic activity and specialties in which it operates. This certification is recognized by the Panamerican Federation of Consulting Associations, FEPAC and extends to all its member countries, and it has a term of three years, after which a recertification process must be carried out.
